Humboldt Lodge No. 79 – June 2024

Greetings, brethren.

June is finally here. Temperatures are rising and the weather has been beautiful lately. It’s the perfect time to enjoy the great outdoors of Humboldt County.  Whether it’s strolling on the beach, or hiking in the redwood forests, now is the time to be outside.

I would like to take a moment to thank all the brothers that showed up at Ocean View and Sunset cemeteries to put flags out for Veterans Day. It was a fun time, except for those blood thirsty mosquitoes. In the end, we put out and collected about 3,000 flags in total.

We have some degrees coming up including a couple of 3rd degrees. We just need a few more practices and we’ll get them on the calendar. Stay tuned.

Quote of the month:

“What lies behind us, and what lies before us, are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.”—Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Our June calendar of events is listed below.

June 6th, Thursday – Humboldt Lodge Stated Meeting at 7:00pm

June 8th, Saturday – District School of Instruction at Crescent Lodge in Crescent City. Starting at 10:00am.

June 20th, Thursday – Rehearsal of the 2nd section of the 3rd degree at 6:30pm.

June 27th, Thursday – 2nd degree for Brother Leo Herrera at 6:30pm.

June 30th, Sunday – Crabs baseball game at the Arcata Ballpark starting at noon. $10.00 a person and this includes the game ticket, food and drinks. Bring the whole family. Tickets can be purchased on the lodge website.

And now, I’d like to introduce you to Joshua Lawrence.

Josh was born in Arcata, California and raised in Cutten. He is a software developer by trade and has been married to his wife Ann for 15 years in September. She is a part-time flight attendant and they met at the airport in McKinleyville. He is a dog lover and has two of them, Jake and Zelda. The older dog, Jake is about 15 years of age. Josh and Ann got him the first year of their marriage.

In his spare time Josh likes to work with his hands. One project that Josh enjoyed was remodeling his AirBnB. It gave him the chance to, “do something that doesn’t require a computer” he told me. I understand that feeling. (I also work with computers all day.)

And he has done some traveling. He was telling me about a trip to Machupicchu in Peru, before COVID and how he enjoyed taking pictures and trying some of the local delicacies, including fire roasted guinea pig on a spit. “Gamey” was how he described its flavor. Funny, I thought it would have tasted like chicken.

When I asked Josh what he most liked about Freemasonry, he said it was the friendships he has made over the years with his lodge brothers. “I have made friends with guys that I might have never crossed paths with outside of the lodge.”

Josh frequently attends our lodge events with Ann and you can also find him at our monthly stated meetings.

Respectfully,

Dan Sarver

Bethel No. 86 Eureka, JDI

It has been a while since our Bethel updated its article in the new Trestleboard, and we have had quite a busy term!

We had installation on January 7 with a theme of “Friends are like snowflakes, all different and all are beautiful.”  Betsy was installed for her second term as Honored Queen.

In March we decided to have a fun night, and all met at Ultimate Yogurt for a social get-together.

Also, in March some of our members helped with the Scottish Rite Shrimp Feed.

In April we attended the Humboldt Lodge’s youth night and explained the meaning of our Bethel Flag to the Masons.

In April we also took part in the Rhododendron Parade, which is always a lot of fun!

In early May we had a Spring fundraiser of making and selling boxes of cookies and other treats.  We want to thank everyone who supported our fundraiser!  We are so grateful to everyone who bought our cookies!

We have been busy all term long planning a couple big events.  One of them was on May 25 when all the Job’s Daughters from several Bethels including Eureka, Ukiah, and some Bay Area Bethels all met in Ukiah to do a service project with the residents of a senior home.  We played games, visited, sang songs with the residents, all as a part of our Grand Guardian’s Official Visit.  Our Job’s Daughter Team of Bethels also presented to the Grand Guardian and Associate Grand Guardian framed certificates and star maps to the stars we had named in their honor.

After the Grand Guardian’s Official Visit, our Bethel grabbed some dinner at KFC before going to the Ukiah Lodge for the reception honoring the Grand Bethel Librarian.  Our own Miss Brooke Hansen was both the Presiding Officer and the Hostess for the evening, and her mother Mrs. Sally Hansen was Honorary Recorder.  However, Since Mrs. Hansen had broken her leg and had difficulty with walking, our Guide Logan filled in as her “walker” and walked in and then was in the closing cross in Mrs. Hansen’s place.  Logan did a great job!

After the reception, it was a long drive home at night, getting to Humboldt Hill about 12:30 a.m. on Sunday morning.  And some of us had to be at our own Lodge at 9:00, others by 11:00 to decorate and practice for a reception honoring Mrs. Sally Hansen, Grand First Messenger.  The reception started at 1:00, and was well attended.  The theme for the reception was based on Mrs. Hansen’s favorite reality shows, “Survivor,” “Big Brother,” and “Amazing Race.”

Still to come, our next installation is planned for June 9 at 1:00 p.m. with a fairyland theme.  We hope you will be able to attend!

Then on June 15, we will participate in the Flag Ceremony at the Elks Lodge at Noon.

Then we blast off to Grand Bethel in Visalia!  We will tell you how that turns out when we get back.

And, of course, we will have our Krispie Kreme donut booth in Old Town Eureka on the 4th of July!  Please drop by and buy some donuts!  We will be in Old Town from opening until we sell out of donuts!  Except for our Honored Queen, who will zip down to Ferndale to participate in their parade.

Thank you to everyone who supports our Bethel!  We look forward to seeing you at some of our events!

Best wishes,

Bethel No. 86 Eureka

ROHNERVILLE-REDWOOD CHAPTER No. 76 – June 2024

ROHNERVILLE-REDWOOD CHAPTER No. 76 – June 2024

June is known for graduations, weddings, and the start of summer. For Rohnerville-Redwood Chapter this June it will mean attending the production of ‘Prom’ at the Ferndale Rep., and since we will not be having a Memorial ceremony this year, the theme for the meeting will be Summer Fun.

Last month I had the chance to deliver cookie boxes to our 50-year members and shut-ins. It is always nice to have the opportunity to honor these special members, and visit with them. Thank you to Bethel No. 86 JDI for the lovely cookie boxes.

Worthy Matron Kim was able to deliver our Books for Bikes books donation to  the Linell Walker (South School) Elementary School in May. With all the cuts in education funding, it is great to be able to support the local schools with the donation of library books. In the fall the school will start the Books for Bikes program, where the students read books to receive a chance to win a bike. The more books they read, the more chances they have to win.

Randy’s 2022 entry

Humboldt Lodge No. 79 – May 2024

Greetings, brethren.

The month of May is here, and Spring is in full bloom. It’s my favorite season for a lot of reasons, the beautiful flowers, the mild temperatures, but mostly, it’s the fragrances. Lilacs blooming, their sweet smell on the breeze. Falling asleep at night to the scent of Jasmine flowers right outside the bedroom window. And my wife’s favorite, viburnum, sweet and spicy in all its splendor.

Quote of the month:

“Spring is far more than a changing of the seasons; it is a rebirth of the spirit.” – Toni Sorenson

Congratulations to Brother Doug Brown for obtaining his 3rd degree proficiency. Well done! And a special thank you to Worshipful Nick Bertell for being his coach.

I would like to thank all the brothers that attended the district school of instruction on April 25th. The brethren’s ritual is coming along nicely and I’m proud of the commitment you all have shown. A special thank you to Sandy Lambo for the absolutely excellent meatball sandwiches.

Upcoming events:

Thursday, May 2nd – Stated meeting at 7pm.

Thursday, May 9th – The all-important 1st degree for Mr. Sheyenne Cimaron Stillinger at 6:30pm. Brothers, I want as many masons on the sidelines as possible for this degree. Let’s give Mr. Stillinger a 1st degree he’ll always remember!

Saturday, May 11th – Coffee with the Master at 9am. We have some things to discuss regarding the upcoming cornerstone events in September. Right after coffee, there is a Masonic Blood donation at the Northern California Community Blood Bank, approximately 11am.

Thursday, May 16th – 3rd degree rehearsal.

Thursday, May 23th – 3rd degree rehearsal.

Saturday, May 25th – There are two events. First at 8am, we are meeting up at Oceanview cemetery to put flags on the graves of our veterans. Flags will be collected on Monday, May 27th starting at 3pm. All masons and their families are welcome to attend.

The second event, later that evening at 6pm, we are having a masonic barbecue at Six Rivers Lodge No. 106. This is a no cost event that will feature fellowship, food, whisky, and cigars. All masons are welcome.

Thursday, May 30th – 3rd degree rehearsal.

A very busy month indeed. I’m looking forward to it.

And now, I’d like to introduce you to Brother Peter Castellano.

Born in Oklahoma, Pete moved to Florida at age 7. He then moved to Humboldt in 1999 to attend college.

Pete is a direct support professional for Humboldt Community Access and Resource Center (HCAR) and works at The Studio, helping people with disabilities. Over time, he worked himself up the ranks and now manages the program.

Pete has a lot of interests and hobbies. In his spare time, he enjoys cooking, going to the beach, kayaking, fishing, photography, collecting marbles, rock hunting and rock tumbling.

Caitlan is Pete’s wife of 7 years. And they have two fur babies, Ved the dog and Davey the cat.

When I asked Pete what he most enjoys about free masonry he said that the fraternity gives him the opportunity to a have a larger effect on the world than just by himself. “It’s a better framework for improving myself. Making me a better person. And let’s not forget helping Santa get tuned up for Christmas as his masonic elf!

We are looking forward to a busy term with them and wish them all the best.

We are also looking forward to hosting a Game night and some other fun activities, so keep your eyes open to more information.

I wish you all a beautiful May, and Happy Mother’s Day to all our lovely Mothers.

Ferndale Chapter No. 23 – May 2024

Farewell April, Hello May!

Welcome to the new format of the Northcoast Masonic Trestleboard!  While most members will now access the Trestleboard electronically, we want to be sure those who need a printed copy are not left out.  To that end, if you know of a Ferndale Eastern Star member who needs a printed copy, Sister Patti Cady wants to know (707.845.6943).  She is our volunteer who will print and mail the Trestleboard monthly to Ferndale Chapter members who don’t have online access.

April sunshine was glorious the morning of our hugely successful Aebleskiver Breakfast and we are in high spirits as we spring forward into May.  Before closing out April, though, do mark the 28th on your calendar.  Brothers of Ferndale Lodge 193 cordially invite Chapter members to a Sweetheart Tea on April 28th, two o’clock in the afternoon at Ferndale Lodge Hall.  Your presence is greatly appreciated at this annual social event.

On the calendar for May:

May 2nd:  Ferndale Chapter members are cooking and serving Arcata Chapter’s pre-meeting dinner.

May 4th – 11th:  March of the Penguins bus trip.

May 8th – Ferndale’s stated meeting.  A Mexican potluck is planned for 6:30; Sister Janessa and her Grandpa will preside in my absence. Festive, casual attire is perfect.  Theme: “Honoring Mothers and Important Women in our Lives”.  Anticipate short-form opening.  Reminder:  May is the final month of our generous donor’s offer to match funds placed in the coin basket designated for Eastern Star’s Outreach Services Program – the Worthy Grand Matron and Worthy Grand Patron’s internal project for 2024.  These funds are specifically designated to provide assistance to members in need who are not residents of the Senior Living Community.

Wishing our May Birthday celebrants many blessings in their next year around the sun.  Sisters Linda Morin, May 2nd; Barbara Kennedy, May 9th; Sandra Buchanan May 16th; and JoLynn McCorkle, May 21st.

May the Lord watch over me and thee while we are absent one from the other!

With Penguin Love and Husky hugs,

Nancy Bay, WM and Kirby Bay, WP

Arcata Chapter No. 207 – April 2024

Hello Sisters and Brothers, and our Humboldt Masonic Family!

March was a month of rest as we enjoyed our busy, but successful, month of February.  We had a wonderful Official Visit from Our Deputy Grand Matron, Sister Lisa McCombs, at our March Stated Meeting.  Sister Anne provided a yummy corned beef and cabbage dinner, thank you!!

Our thanks to the guys at Humboldt Lodge for taking on the new format of the Trestleboard!  Please be patient and kind as we transition.  If you have any questions or comments, please let me know by our chapter email, arcata207oes@gmail.com, and I will get back to you.  If you are not receiving emails from us, please let me know so I can ensure that we have your correct email address.  If you need a printed-out copy, please let me know and I can arrange to have that mailed.

April brings a welcome to springtime, a time of renewal of spirit and energy.  My hope for everyone is happiness, health, friendship and love.  Please try and reach out to someone who is struggling with these and offer them warmth from all our hearts.

April 4th is our Stated Meeting.  It will be long form and business casual.  Springtime theme, pastels and flowers.  The following stated meeting will be on May 4th, where we will enjoy a dinner catered by Ferndale Chapter.  All our stated meeting dinners start at 6:30, we hope to see everyone then!

With many hugs, Heidi Quintrell, WM
